Revitalised space enhances culturally grounded services for our mob on the Gold Coast

Kalwun Development Corporation officially re-opened the newly renovated Child, Youth and Family Services office in Burleigh Heads on June 9, strengthening our capacity to deliver culturally safe and high-quality care to First Nations children, young people and families on the Gold Coast.

The Honourable Amanda Camm MP, Minister for Families, Seniors and Disability Services and Minister for Child Safety and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, officially opened the site alongside Kalwun’s CEO, Kieran Chilcott, and other distinguished guests. The event marked the first time a Government Minister has formally opened a Kalwun service.

Many notable guests also attended the ceremony, including Member for Burleigh, Mr Herman Vorster MP; Division 13 for Councillor, Josh Martin; Kalwun’s Chairperson, Mr William Oui; and Child, Youth and Family Services General Manager and member of Kalwun’s Board of Directors, Vanessa Summers.

We also acknowledge the presence and ongoing support of partners from the Aboriginal Community Controlled sector, the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak (QATSICPP), and the Department of Child Safety.

“Kalwun does not do this work alone. We work alongside Government, alongside community, and most importantly, alongside our families who trust us with their stories and their journeys,” said Kalwun’s Chairperson, Mr William Oui.

“This re-opening represents confidence in that work. It represents growth and a shared commitment to doing better for our families into the future.”

The building is part of an important chapter in Kalwun’s history. Since first operating at this site in 2001 as an Aboriginal medical service, Kalwun has continued to grow and respond to the needs of our community.

Today, Kalwun Child, Youth and Family Services spans across three locations, in Burleigh Heads, Coomera and Beaudesert, delivering vital programs that support First Nations children, young people and families across the region.

The day was a reminder of how far Kalwun has come in its journey of delivering community-led and culturally informed services, and of our deep commitment to supporting our First Nations community on the Gold Coast.

Get ready to celebrate 50 Years of Deadly!

We have plenty of exciting events and activities planned for your NAIDOC Week, including our annual NAIDOC Community Day and NAIDOC Celebration March.

Kalwun is proud to host and support a week of free community events across the Gold Coast.

This year's theme, ‘50 years Deadly’, is a celebration of a significant milestone. It is a tribute to the deadly people who built this movement and the deadly communities who keep showing up year after year.

🖤💛❤️ HELP US NAME OUR PROGRAM ❤️💛🖤
We’re inviting community to help rename our Indigenous Tertiary Family Intervention Program.
This program works alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families during challenging times, providing intensive, culturally safe support to help keep jarjums safe, strong and connected to family, kin, community and culture.
At its heart, the program is about supporting families, building trust, strengthening connection and walking together toward positive outcomes.
We want a name that comes from community voice, something that feels right, sounds right, and reflects our culture, strength and spirit.
Got a name idea?
Share it with us along with a short explanation of what it means and why you chose it.
