Family Based Care

Kalwun’s Family Based Care team walks alongside kinship carers, families and jarjums to make sure children feel safe, connected, and strong in their identity. 

We provide practical, cultural and wraparound support to help keep kinship care arrangements stable and supported. Our team stays in regular contact with households, responds when things change, and checks in to make sure carers have what they need and that the caring arrangement continues to be safe and suitable for everyone involved.

Our focus is always on strengthening family, culture and community connections so jarjums and young people can thrive.

Family Based Care - Supporting Kin

Kalwun is funded under Queensland’s new Family Based Care model to deliver Supporting Kin. 

Supporting Kin is focused on supporting approved kinship carers who are caring for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander jarjums and young people.

What is Kinship Care?

Kinship Care is the nurturing and protection of children by relatives or any adult who has a kinship bond with the child. A Kinship Carer may be another Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person who is a member of their community, a compatible community or from the same language group.

The shift from the old Foster and Kinship Care system

The shift from the previous Foster and Kinship Care system has the following benefits for community:

  • Kinship carers receive more focused and culturally responsive support.
  • Jarjums and young people have stronger cultural connection and identity.
  • Families experience clearer communication and more coordinated support.
  • The caring journey feels more supported, stable, and culturally grounded.
