Kalwun Development Corporation has a membership of over 500 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Membership is open to any person able to demonstrate they meet cultural criteria and fees are paid on an annual basis.
Membership of the Society is limited to persons of Aboriginal or Islander descent who are permanent residents on the Gold Coast in Queensland. The area serviced by the Society stretches along the coast from Coolangatta in the south, to Coomera in the north, and west to the boundaries of the Beaudesert Shire.
A report issued by the South Coast Regional Health Authority in 1995 estimates the Gold Coast Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population at 3000 persons, based on a 1993/94 survey and increasing anually.
We believe the population approximates the Regional Health Authority figures, following continuous migration to the coast from around Australia, as judged by the strong growth in demands upon the Company over the past 12 years. Our own statistics clearly confirm increasing ATSI members coming to the coast each year.
